Choose the Right Dumpster Size
Sizing roll-offs for Doña Ana County soil since 2019.
📞 Find your size — Call (575) 319-8484We rent five roll-off sizes here, from 10 to 40 yards. Choosing between them in the Mesilla Valley isn’t only about how much fits — it’s about weight, because our caliche and adobe hit a box’s ton limit before it ever looks full. The table and size guide below match each one to real local jobs; the section after explains when to size up for heavy material.
What size dumpster do I need? Match the job: a 10-yard for a bathroom or single room, 15-yard for a kitchen or garage, 20-yard for roofing up to ~2,000 sq ft or a multi-room remodel, 30-yard for tile roofs, estate cleanouts, and caliche excavation, and a 40-yard for commercial demo, orchard cleanup, or a pool dig. Not sure? Call (575) 319-8484 — we size it for your soil and season.

The One Rule That Matters in Las Cruces: Volume vs. Weight
Everywhere else, choosing a dumpster is about how much fits. Here, it’s also about how much it weighs — and that’s the mistake we fix on the phone every day. Disposal is charged by the ton, and Doña Ana County material is dense:
- Caliche (the calcium-carbonate hardpan under the East Mesa, Sonoma Ranch, and Fairacres) — 2,000–2,800 lbs per cubic yard, per USDA NRCS soil data.
- Adobe (old walls near the Mesquite Historic District and Mesilla) — about 3,200 lbs per cubic yard.
- Clay / Saltillo roof tile — 700–900 lbs per square of roof coverage.
The Rule: For light material (household junk, furniture, cardboard, drywall, wood) — pick your size by volume and fill it up. For heavy material (dirt, caliche, concrete, brick, adobe, tile) — go one size up and keep the load level with the top rail. That’s why we push tile roofs and any excavation to a 30-yard even when a 20 would hold the volume.
Which Size for Your Job? A Local’s Guide
10-Yard
The small, driveway-friendly box. Perfect for a single-bathroom remodel, one-room demo, a small garage or closet purge, or an NMSU rental turnover. Holds about 3 pickup-truck loads. Because it’s compact, it’s also our go-to for heavy but small jobs — a little concrete or tile that would overload nothing bigger by weight.
15-Yard
The in-between size people wish more companies carried. Ideal for a kitchen remodel, a full garage cleanout, a deck or shed tear-out, or a West Mesa xeriscape conversion where you’re pulling grass, gravel, and old landscaping. Roomier than a 10 without the footprint of a 20.
20-Yard
The workhorse and our most-rented size. It handles an asphalt-shingle roof up to about 2,000 sq ft, a multi-room remodel, or a whole-house flooring tear-outer — and still tucks onto a standard Las Cruces driveway. If you’re not sure between a 15 and a 30, this is usually the answer.
30-Yard
The heavy-job box. Reach for it on a clay or Saltillo tile reroof, a whole-home estate cleanout, or caliche excavation. Its 6-ft walls and 3.5–4 ton allowance give you the room and the weight headroom that tile, adobe, and dirt demand.
40-Yard
The biggest we run. Built for commercial demolition, large construction, a pecan orchard cleanup out in Fairacres or Hatch Rd, or a full pool excavation. If you’re a contractor staging a long job, ask about our swap-out and staging program so you’re never waiting on an empty.
Will It Fit? Placement & Driveway Space
Every roll-off we run is 8 ft wide, and the 20 through 40-yard boxes need about 22 ft of length plus overhead room for the truck to tip and set it. A typical Las Cruces driveway handles any size with room to spare, and we lay down boards to protect concrete, pavers, and asphalt. Placement on your own driveway or property needs no permit. Only a dumpster set on a public street or right-of-way triggers a City of Las Cruces permit under Municipal Code Title 14 (Building Safety desk, (575) 528-3100). In HOA neighborhoods like Sonoma Ranch, Las Alturas, and Picacho Hills, we already know the common placement rules and will work within them.
Time Your Rental With the Local Calendar
All five sizes are available year-round, but the busy seasons book up — reserve ahead during spring cleanout/remodel season (Feb–May), NMSU move-out (May & August), and pecan harvest (Oct–Nov), when 40-yard demand spikes for orchard cleanup. During monsoon season (Jul–Sep), afternoon storms roll in around 2–7 PM (per NOAA), so we schedule pickups in the morning to keep your debris dry. The easiest scheduling and best availability is December through February.
Dumpster Size FAQ
What dumpster sizes can I rent in Las Cruces?
Five roll-offs: 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 yard. For a rough feel, a 10-yard holds about three pickup-truck loads and a 40-yard about twelve. The 20-yard is the most-rented because it clears most remodels and asphalt roofs while still fitting a standard driveway.
What size dumpster do I need for a roof replacement in Las Cruces?
A 20-yard for a standard asphalt roof up to about 2,000 sq ft (roughly 20 squares). Clay or Saltillo tile is far heavier at 700–900 lbs per square, so tile reroofs move up to a 30-yard on weight alone, even when the debris would fit a 20 by volume.
What size dumpster do I need for dirt or caliche excavation?
Start at a 30-yard and keep the load level with the rails. Caliche runs 2,000–2,800 lbs per cubic yard (USDA NRCS, Doña Ana County), so a container that looks two-thirds full can already be over its ton limit. Full pool digs and large excavations usually take a 40-yard.
What’s the most popular dumpster size in Las Cruces?
The 20-yard, at $215–$325 all-in. Its 2.5–3 ton allowance and 22-ft footprint cover the widest range of local jobs and still fit a normal driveway — which is why it’s the size we reach for when a caller is stuck between a 15 and a 30.
Will a roll-off dumpster fit in my driveway?
Almost always. Every box is 8 ft wide; the 20 through 40 need about 22 ft of length plus overhead clearance for the truck to tip and set it. We lay boards to protect concrete and pavers. Only a container placed on a public street needs a City permit (Municipal Code Title 14).
Can I switch to a bigger dumpster size after delivery?
Yes. If you realize mid-project you need more room or weight capacity, we’ll swap the box or bring a second one. Right-sizing is cheaper than overloading — an overfilled box can’t be legally hauled and has to be off-loaded first.
