A cleanout is a sorting job before it is a hauling job. Work one room at a time and decide keep, donate, sell, or haul before anything goes in the container — that keeps the box carrying only what truly belongs there. As a rough gauge, a 1,200–1,800 sq ft home cleared of furniture and everyday clutter fills a 20-yard; a packed 2,500 sq ft house, a downsizing, or a hoarding-level job runs a 30-yard or two hauls. The garage, kitchen, and storage rooms hold the most weight and bulk, so size the box around those spaces rather than the bedrooms.
What size dumpster do I need for a home cleanout?
A 15-yard covers a room-by-room declutter or a packed garage; a 20-yard suits a full-house purge with furniture and appliances; step up to a 30-yard for a whole-home or hoarding-level clear-out. When in doubt, size up — an emptier box costs less than a second haul.
| Cleanout job | Size | Flat rate |
|---|---|---|
| Single room, closet, or garage declutter | 15-yard | $175–$250 |
| Full-house purge, downsizing, foreclosure clear-out | 20-yard | $215–$325 |
| Whole-home or hoarding-level cleanout | 30-yard | $350–$475 |

Sort before you toss — it lowers the bill
Disposal is billed by weight at the SCSWA scale, so the lightest load is the cheapest one — anything you divert never reaches the per-ton line. Reusable furniture, working appliances, and leftover building materials can often go to local thrift stores or the Habitat for Humanity ReStore; scrap metal such as bed frames, old appliances, and fencing has its own recyclers; paper records and electronics have separate drop-offs. What is left — broken, stained, or genuinely spent — is what the roll-off is for. On a full-house job, an hour spent sorting usually trims more off the tonnage than it costs in time.
What needs special handling
A clear-out always turns up a few things the box cannot take as-is. Set these aside so the load stays compliant and the pickup is not refused at the scale:
| Item | Why it’s special | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Fridge, freezer, AC unit, dehumidifier | Refrigerant is regulated (federal EPA Section 608) | Recovered by a licensed tech first, then the unit rides in the box |
| Tires, car batteries, propane tanks | Banned from the landfill working face | Dropped at SCSWA separately |
| Paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals | Household hazardous waste | SCSWA household-hazardous-waste collection |
| TVs, monitors, computers | Electronic waste | Electronics recycling drop-off |
| Mattresses | Accepted, just bulky | Fine in the box — they fill volume fast |
How much does a cleanout cost in Las Cruces?
Expect $175 to $475 depending on the size you need. That flat rate covers delivery, 7 to 14 days on site, and pickup; disposal is billed separately at the landfill’s per-ton rate, with the certified scale ticket on your invoice so you only pay for real weight.
How long can I keep the dumpster?
Seven to fourteen days come with the flat rate, which is enough for a weekend blitz or a room-a-day pace over two weeks. If you are clearing a house slowly or waiting on family to sort belongings, we can extend the hold — just ask when you book.
What can I throw away?
Furniture, mattresses, clothing, boxes, carpet, appliances, and general household clutter all go in. Refrigerators and AC units need their refrigerant removed first. Keep out paint, chemicals, tires, batteries, and propane tanks — the landfill’s list is the final word.
Details & Logistics
Driveway placement, permits & timing
We set the container in your driveway on boards, so it does not mark the concrete, pavers, or a sealed surface. On your own property no permit is required; a box placed on a public street or in a travel lane needs a City permit under Municipal Code Title 14 (Building Safety, (575) 528-3100). For timing, a call before noon usually earns same-afternoon delivery across the Las Cruces core (zips 88001–88012), while rural La Mesa, Fairacres, Anthony, and Rincon are typically next-day. The busiest clear-out window locally is the spring stretch from February through May, so book a few days ahead then. See same-day rental for the full cutoff details.
Is a home cleanout the same as an estate cleanout?
They overlap but differ in scale and paperwork. A home cleanout is a declutter, downsizing, or pre-sale clear-out you are managing yourself. An estate cleanout follows a death or move to care and often needs disposal documentation for an executor — we cover that separately on the estate cleanout page.
